A week of milestones: New job. 23rd birthday. One year in New York. Brand new blog. Isn’t it funny how in life, everything happens at once? It’s like the recurring circle of dating after you’ve given up because every guy is a douchebag. Commence the dry-spell of feeling unloved and lonely. Then all of a sudden, boom! You’re stressed out about having TOO MANY prospects all texting you at once. (We don’t need to get into my horrific dating pattern right now. I’ll save this for their own posts, don’t you worry).
Right now, I’m going to be honest with you about how it feels to have so many new events occurring in my life simultaneously. It’s hard, and sometimes I feel like I’m on the verge of a mental break, where I’ll give up and become a recluse at any moment. You know, that feeling of just wanting to disappear and hide under the covers with Netflix and unlimited snacks. The only caveat, you can’t.
Here are my 5 steps for reining in the crazy and kicking ass while doing so:
Step 1: One Step at a Time
Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, I think about what my Mom used to tell me as a kid when I was begging her to let me skip school because I couldn’t finish all of my work. She’d say, “Don’t think of everything at once. Take things one step at a time. You’ll finish.” To this day, I repeat this mantra in my head when the obligations start to pile up.
By not thinking of the due dates, social obligations, personal insecurity, appointments, and other stress inducers all at once, you’re able to compartmentalize. This way, once you’ve completed one task, you can check it off and move on to the next. Until eventually, you’ve finished them all (OFY)!
Step 2: Have Fun
This brings me to step 2, have fun. I truly live by the work hard, play hard (and sometimes harder) ideology. After a long week of stress at work, killer workouts, and overwhelming adulting, it’s time to blow off steam. I normally choose one day per weekend to just go hard with my friends. Eat too much food, buy too many clothes (vintage normally keeps my credit card bill in check) drink too much alcohol (normally @ Bounce). Then, remind yourself that you have your whole life ahead of you to be serious.
Step 3: Meditate
The way I meditate isn’t by the book, it’s not true meditation by definition, but it works for me. At the end of a stressful day, in which I may or may not have finished all of my tasks, it’s time to tell my brain to shut the hell up. I plop on my noise-canceling headphones and listen to guided meditations on Youtube relating to how I’m feeling, and eventually fall asleep. My favorite Youtube channels include Jason Stephenson, Michael Sealey, The Honest Guys, and Meditation Vacation.
Step 4: Workout
When I’m feeling stressed out, sometimes all I need a sweat sesh to get my endorphins and serotonin pumping and give myself a serious confidence booster. Oftentimes, I’m tempted by alluring invites of meeting my friends at the bar, but I know that the best way to have myself feeling like a million bucks the next day is to crush it in the gym. I’ll go more in-depth in dedicated posts about my favorite regime, but a brief highlight includes: lifting at the gym (thanks @Crunch), blowing off steam boxing, or taking different HIIT classes around the city to slay some serious calories.
Step 5: Vent to Someone
Thank god for my friends and for my family. I seriously, don’t know what I’d do without the people that have constant sympathy for me, or sometimes, give me a hard reality check. I naturally vent to different people about different subjects, but I always emerge feeling like I just went to confession (I’m Jewish so I don’t actually know what this is like, but I can imagine it’s like this). Thanks to my Mom and Nana for listening to pretty much all of my complaints, my best friends for putting up with my boy BS, and my Step-Dad, brother, and Dad for listening to my work worries.
